Boasting the distinguished title of "oldest art museum in the Western United States," Crocker Art Museum features a collection of European, Asian, and Californian art. Some of the most popular items to see here include Thomas Hill's 1871 piece "The Great Canyon, Yosemite," and "Sunday Morning in the Mines," an 1872 painting by Charles Christian Nahl that depicts life during Sacramento's mining days. The building itself is a beautiful piece of artwork, with 19th-century woodwork and plaster moldings visible in the museum's lobby and ballroom. You can also enjoy regular holiday exhibits.

If new and experimental art is your thing, don't miss the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento. Founded in 1989, the center is a member-supported, nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of such works by international, national, and regional artists. The Center for Contemporary Art also hosts special events, including the Annual Benefit Art Auction, CAST (Capitol Artists Studio Tour), and monthly lectures and workshops for art students.

"Our aim is to expose the local community to global art. We realize that the Sacramento population is a representation of the world globally and we desire to build networks and strengthen community through cultural exchanges," states the museum's website. At the Sojourner Truth Multicultural Art Museum (also known as SOJO), visitors can enjoy Asian, African, Hispanic, and Native American art from around the world. One of the added bonuses of this museum is that these featured works also represent the multicultural and multi-ethnic population of the Sacramento community.
