Sacramento, West Sacramento Mayors Team Up To Raise Money For Youth
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – On Saturday, the mayors of West Sacramento and Sacramento joined forces to raise money for youth programs on both sides of the river.
"Chris Cabaldon and I are rivals. So, we got the West Sacramento team competing against the Sacramento team," said Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
Johnson and West Sacramento Mayor Chris Cabaldon were having a little pre-ride fun.
"He's got his bike gear on. I'm going to take off mine and have my superman suit on, and then I wanna win the race at the end of the day," said Johnson, laughing.
It was all in good fun as the two went 40 miles, swinging through both cities.
"Absolutely ultimate, perfect weather for cycling today," said one rider.
It was an impressive turnout of about 200 riders for an event that so far has brought in $60,000.
"The money that we raise in Oak Park will send those kids to a leadership camp, and in West Sacramento provide some support and opportunities for them," said one organizer.
The GearUp Cycle for Youth Bike Ride has gained support from teachers and local business leaders.
"A lot of my students will probably benefit from the programs this ride supports," another participant said.
Both mayors may have been eyeing the finish line for a personal victory, but they share the vision for what the two cities can accomplish.
"This is a great chance at 10 to 15 miles per hour to bike by and see each other's towns for what they are, and it's great bringing together the two sides of the river," said Cabaldon.
The ride ended at Cesar Chavez Park with bands and food trucks at the finish, ready to feed all of the cyclists.
