Sacramento Unified Votes To Close School To Save Money
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento City Unified School District has voted to close an elementary school as the district tries to balance its budget.
The school board voted 6-1 Thursday night in favor of shuttering Freeport Elementary, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Freeport Elementary was just one of three schools the district had been considering for closure. The others were A.M. Winn Elementary and C.P. Huntington Elementary.
The board voted to keep C.P. Huntington open. However, they delayed a decision on A.M. Winn until March 1.
Freeport Elementary will close after this school year, saving the district more than $400,000.
Outside of the meeting, dozens of teachers protested the use of consultants by the district. The protesters say the district has spent millions of dollars on consultants, forcing proposed massive cuts to student programs and services.
