Sacramento Residents, Officials Prepare For Storm By Clearing Leaves, Readying Plans
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Josephine Hein was concerned enough about Thursday's storm to take to her street and clear her neighbor's leaves.
"The drain is over there, and when it rains the water floods and the drain gets blocked out," she said.
The storm is expected to blow in with high winds and heavy rain, likely knocking down trees and power lines and causing flooding, especially where leaves are blocking drains.
George Booth with the Sacramento County Department of Water resources was glad to see crews and citizens out clearing leaves on Wednesday.
"There's no magic in this; we're all in this together; every property owner every neighborhood needs to take care of business," he said. "You're going to have problems and then the water fills up your street it fills up your garage, and into your house, and floods your car, and it's a lot of stuff that could have been avoided."
As the streets are shored up, other agencies like the Sacramento Area Sewer District are preparing with extra crews and backup generators.
Rosemary Clar says they need electricity to pump out your sewage.
"If people see sewage, a slow drain in their own home, or sewage they think is coming out of a manhole, we have our lines available," she said.
The governor's Office of Emergency Safety says they are monitoring the weather with plans to activate their operations center on Thursday, and calling for resources as needed.
If there are piles of leaves outside your home that you think are going to be picked up by a government agency, it's too late.
