Sacramento Red Cross Volunteers Dispatched To East Coast
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -– Two Sacramento Red Cross volunteers took are heading to the East Coast to help recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
A red-eye flight to Atlanta, then Baltimore, then a rental car for a 200-mile drive to New York. From there the pair could be dispatched to New England, still reeling from record rainfall.
Joy Evans and another area volunteer traveling with her won't sleep much other than on planes the next 36 hours. It's a disaster big enough to call in reinforcements from around the country.
"The volunteers, they need a rest, so a fresh crew comes in and works the shelters," Evans said outside of Sacramento International Airport on Monday night before boarding her flight.
