Sacramento Native Susac Says Goodbye To Giants
The San Francisco Giants made a couple of significant trades before Monday's trade deadline, including one that sent Sacramento native Andrew Susac to the Milwaukee Brewers for reliever Will Smith.
The former Giants catcher was drafted by his hometown organization in the second round of the 2011 draft straight out of Jesuit High School in Carmichael, and has spent parts of three seasons playing for the Sacramento River Cats.
Shortly after hearing of his departure to the Brewers, Susac took the opportunity to thank the Giants organization on Twitter:
Susac won a ring with the Giants in 2014 when he was sharing the backup catcher role with Hector Sanchez. He hadn't played in San Francisco this year, but was dealing with injuries for the first half of the season.
Although he never played more than 90 games with the Giants, his many fans in Sacramento and Greater Bay Area will miss him in a Giants or River Cats uniform.
Plus, his situation in Milwaukee looks a little brighter than the one in San Francisco.
With future Hall of Famer (probably) Buster Posey signed for life (probably, again), Susac was blocked at the catcher position for the next handful of years. Now that the Brewers traded away their starting catcher Jonathan Lucroy to the Texas Rangers, Susac will soon have a chance to fight for the starting spot in Milwaukee.
First, Susac will head to their Triple-A team in Colorado Springs, but the next time he faces the River Cats or Giants in a different uniform, I'm sure he will have plenty of fans rooting for him anyway.
