Sacramento Libraries Host Prom Dress Giveaways

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Prom night can be expensive – especially for the ladies.  But, the cost of prom isn't keeping some local girls from missing out.

Girls from Grant High School were out picking out free prom dresses Saturday.

"It was a good opportunity 'cause that's 300 bucks I could be saving in my pocket," Rubi Ramirez said.

The South Natomas Library is one of seven local libraries collecting formal wear to give out to local teenagers.

"We got a lot of dresses that still had the tags on them," said Youth Services Librarian Marian Simmons.

The teens have people in the community to thank for cleaning out their closets and giving back, making prom an affordable experience.

"Prom dresses can be so expensive, and it can be difficult for a teen to attend a special event like this because the cost is so high," Simmons said.

The program started three years ago in the Sacramento Public Library.

"I got a dress, gloves and a purse," Angela Jimenez said.

Dresses and accessories have been collected for two months now. The girls can come in with their student I.D. and leave ready for prom.

"It just makes me happy that there's people willing to donate their dresses and give other young women a chance to wear their dresses for prom," Ramirez said.

You can visit the Sacramento Public Library online for a list of locations taking part in the prom dress giveaway. The dresses are for girls between the ages of 13 and 19.
