ELK GROVE — A Sacramento-area high school student was arrested after authorities said Thursday the teen was found with a loaded gun and two knives on campus.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said the 15-year-old was a student of Valley High School within the Elk Grove Unified School District.

Inside the student's backpack was a fully loaded handgun with a 14-round magazine, a folding knife and a fixed-blade knife, authorities said.

The student was booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall and faces multiple weapons-related charges.

Additionally, the student's older sibling, 16, who was also a Valley High student, was found to be in possession of pepper spray. Due to pepper spray also being illegal to have on a school campus, the sheriff's office said the sibling was issued a citation but was released to their parents.

Elk Grove Unified staff were first notified of the weapons by a witness who said that the older sibling had been carrying the gun on campus the day prior, the sheriff's office said. Sheriff's deputies and school resource officers from the Elk Grove Police Department immediately detained the siblings.

The sheriff's office said no threats had been made toward the school nor to any students or staff.
