Firefighters Save 5 Homeless People From Burning Building
Sacramento (CBS13) - Fire crews were able to save several homeless occupants staying in an abandoned south Sacramento building that caught fire early Saturday morning.
Just after 7 a.m., Metro Fire responded to the 8300 block of Carbide Court to reports of black smoke coming from the building.
Fire personnel say the building's sprinkler system was not functioning and that it is frequently occupied by the homeless. So, responding crews quickly began looking for anyone possibly inside.
Metro Fire Battalion Chief Forrest Rowell credited previous building inspections in assisting firefighters' quick actions.
"By extensive pre-planning, responding crews received information unique to this building, specific hazard knowledge needed to initiate an effective plan," he said.
About $5,000 worth of damage was done to the building, authorities say.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
There were no reported injuries.
