Sacramento Federal Employees Back On The Job As Federal Shutdown Ends
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Federal employees were back on the job in Sacramento, a day after Congress approved legislation to end the government shutdown.
Joe Managan, with the Army Corps of Engineers, was one of 200 employees told to head home without pay.
"As you can imagine, it's unsettling to have this fiscal uncertainty," he said. "You have to make sure that things are squared away, because you don't know when that next paycheck will come, if it will come."
They will get back pay for now, but the 450 workers at the Bureau of Land Management, like Kylee Moore, were furloughed for the entire 16 days.
"It's very difficult, because you never knew if you were going to be back at work the next day, so you really can't do too much," she said.
Now that they're back to work, it's time to play catch-up. And that means deciding what to take on first.
"It's like triage," Managan said. "You got to go through things and see what's hottest."
The stacks of papers have piled up at work, but at least the break gave them time to clean up at home.
"I can tell you I have one of the cleanest houses in the neighborhood right now," Moore said.
