Sacramento Considering Napa In Its 2019 NBA All-Star Game Push
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento is putting together a gameplan to land the 2019 NBA All-Star Game with a little help from Napa.
The biggest roadblock, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, is a lack of hotel rooms in Sacramento. The bid is shaking up a lot of talk at downtown businesses.
Nick Duren, the general manager at Grange, says hosting an NBA All-Star Game in Sacramento would cook up thousands of extra dollars for the restaurant.
"It would really be tremendous for downtown businesses, specifically our business with the hotel and restaurant. We would probably benefit the week before and the week after the actual game," he said.
Kings president Chris Granger released the following statement on Friday:
"Our downtown arena will serve as a global model of technology and sustainability, while showcasing Sacramento's unique culture. Together with our regional neighbors, we'll make the case that Sacramento is ready to host the NBA All-Star Game and other major events."
The hoop hype has a big obstacle when it comes to hotels. The city is 2,000 rooms shy of the 5,500 required by the league. Silver said last week that getting the game was a bit of a stretch.
"I stretch only in that we've got to look at you know, how many people the community can accommodate and then we can sort of extend the circle in terms of hotel rooms. But at the end of the day, we need to be able to accommodate all of our guests," he said.
Some of the extra accommodation being explored is through a partnership with Napa Valley.
"We want to explore all of the options. We want to make sure that before we start sending rooms and events that far away from Sacramento that we exhaust every opportunity," said Steve Hammond with the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The host for the 2019 bid will likely be announced in the coming months.
