A's to honor Rickey Henderson on Sacramento home opener by all players, coaches wearing #24
Calling him the greatest player in franchise history, the Athletics will be paying a special tribute to Rickey Henderson on their home opener.
March 31 will mark the A's first game at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. The digs are the A's temporary home field as the team waits for a planned stadium in Las Vegas.
A lineup of events will ring in the start of major league-level baseball in Sacramento, headlined by the Henderson tribute. The A's say all players and coaches will be wearing #24 for the home opener game.
Henderson's daughters are also planned to be in attendance to throw out the first pitch.
Fans will even give a couple of special giveaways: a trucker hat with the new Sacramento jersey patch, and a Rickey Henderson rally towel.
A flyover from Beale Air Force Base during the national anthem is also among the host of opening day festivities, the A's say.
While opening day is sold out, the A's note that 250 lawn seats will be available – like they will all season for Sutter Health Park games – on the day of the game for a fixed $25 price.
The A's will be taking on the Cubs for their home opener on March 31, but the regular season officially gets underway Thursday at the Seattle Mariners.
