Sacramentans Told Sewage Bills Could Triple
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sacramento residents are being told their sewage fees might triple under a plan to protect the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta from pollution.
A letter sent out this week by the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District estimates that sewer bills for 1.3 million residents could jump from $20 to $61.50 per month.
The letter asks people to attend a Dec. 9 meeting where officials will discuss a new state Clean Water Act permit that could put new limits on wastewater dumping in the vital delta. The sanitation district disagrees with many terms of the proposed permit.
The Sacramento Bee says the district mailer that went out to 400,000 people doesn't mention the reason for a possible hike -- or the fact that the actual compliance costs remain uncertain.
