Man Shot In Head While Chasing Carjacking Suspect
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- One person was shot in the head while helping a carjacking victim give chase to a suspect in South Sacramento on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The carjacking victim, who asked not to be identified, said he stopped at an Auto Zone to buy a new car battery, leaving the vehicle turned on.
"I didn't want to turn it off and have it not start again," he said.
An unidentified suspect, who the victim says he had never seen before, hopped into the driver's seat and attempted to drive away. The victim grabbed onto his car and was dragged several feet through the parking lot, suffering minor injuries.
A stranger who witnessed the carjacking pulled up and offered to help chase the suspect while the victim contacted police, he said.
"I was thinking, maybe stay close and call police and tell them where he's at or whatever," he said. "Maybe chasing the car wasn't a good idea."
The two men followed the teal green 1996 Cadillac El Dorado through South Sacramento until the suspect came to a sudden stop.
"As we were following him, he stops in the middle of the street," the carjacking victim said. "And he starts shooting at us."
The suspect fired several shots, sending a round directly through the driver's side window, striking the Good Samaritan in the head, according to Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong.
The wounded driver was able to drive himself to Kaiser South Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening wounds.
"Unfortunately, things like this could happen," said Sgt. Leong. "You just don't know who you're chasing after and in this case the person had a gun and was willing to use it."
The suspect, described as an African-American male in his 20s with "twisties" in his hair, is still at large.
