S.F. Half Marathon Staff Probed Following Death

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A San Francisco official says a half-marathon in which a runner died apparently didn't have enough medical staff on hand.

Rob Dudgeon with the city's Department of Emergency Management said Monday in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle that race organizers had to call city paramedics after the man collapsed. City rules require promoters of such athletic events to have an ambulance and private, mobile teams of emergency medical technicians on scene.

The department is investigating the medical staffing levels and their locations.

Dave Rhody with the company that produced the 13.1-mile race says the finish area included emergency medical personnel and an ambulance with paramedics.

Thirty-six-year-old Peter Hass, of Orinda, collapsed Sunday near the finish line in Golden Gate Park and died at the scene.
