Russell Wilson Thinks Water Fixes Concussions
Russell Wilson is a Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback. Russell Wilson is really good at his job. If one pass didn't get intercepted he may be a back-to-back champion. Considering he's great at his job you get companies that want to use him to plug their products. One of the products that Wilson endorses is something called Reliant Recovery Water. Athletes plugging products is nothing new, Donovan McNabb sponsored Campbell's Chunky Soup, Justin Tuck and RGIII sponsored Subway and Johnny Manziel sponsored Snickers. So why am I telling you about Wilson and his water? Take a look.
"I banged my head during the Packers game in the playoffs, and the next day I was fine," says Wilson. "It was the water."
Wait, what? You said you banged your head against the Packers (concussion) and the water made it better. Look, I'm all for people getting as much money as they can. I know that LeBron doesn't eat McDonalds and Kim Kardashian doesn't wear Sketchers. I know money wins at the end of the day but there were literally thousands of things you could have said. Here are some examples:
- Reliant Recovery Water helps me recover faster after a hard days practice.
- Reliant Recovery Water is the only thing that I, Super Bowl winning quarterback Russell Wilson drinks.
- Reliant Recovery Water is a friend of puppies. Who doesn't love puppies?
- If you're not drinking Reliant Recovery Water, you won't make it in the NFL.
- Aaron Hernandez didn't drink Reliant Recovery Water and look at him now.
OK, maybe I got a little ahead of myself at the end but any of those would have been better than touching on the issue of concussions. Maybe by some miracle or science it did help but now you just sound like a crazy person.
His agent (Mark Rodgers) understood the fire that was surrounding Russell and clarified the statement by saying,
"Well, we're not saying we have real medical proof."
OK, great, story deflected a little bit. Your client got a little ahead of himself but now the story can die down.
Nope! Wilson doubled down on his story and instead wanted people to know about its amazing medical powers.
"I know it works," Wilson said "Soon you're going to be able to order it straight from Amazon."
Be careful Russell. You're getting dangerously close to the place where fans don't like you. Soon, if he continues to be the corporate guy that seems too perfect fans will see him as fake and will then look for reasons to not like him. Ask Alex Rodriguez about that. Fans tend to like their athletes as great but a little damaged. They're more relatable that way.
