Roseville Hosting National Softball Tournament As Temperatures Soar Past 100 Degrees
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — One of the largest softball tournaments in the country is going on in Roseville on a week where temperatures are expected to soar past 100 degrees.
The crack of the bat and the cheer of the crowd were mixed with groans about the heat beating down on the diamond Tuesday for the ASA Nationals Tournament.
Sacramento Breeze Coach Jennifer Birch says a group text message that started days ago has helped to remind these players that they need to drink water at any chance they get.
"Being a high-stakes tournament, I want to make sure we're on our best game so we have to stay hydrated," she said.
Shade, no matter how slim the sliver, kept parents cool while kids helped each other out with water guns. Cooling rags also hung on necks that baked in the summer heat.
Dr. William Borris says he's already treated a patient for heat exhaustion this week.
"The patient is doing fine; it's just a matter of getting early treatment," he said.
He says more than shade and air conditioning, people need to drink water to avoid heat-related illness and know what the signs are.
"Nausea, sometimes all the way up to vomiting. You can get cramps when you have your electrolyte imbalances. You can get cramps in your legs or anywhere," he said.
Kids like Jenna Birch are heeding that advice .
"You always have to get a lot of water so the sun doesn't dry you out," she said.
And while Bob Crow is used to a cool, coastal San Diego climate, he says sweating it out for a smile on these faces is part of being a good father.
"This is a once and a lifetime opportunity for some of these girls, so we will do anything for it," he said .
