Roseville City Council Approves $5 Million Toward Multi-Use Sports Complex
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — Plans to make Placer County a major sports and recreation destination are taking shape with a new complex getting a green light from the Roseville City Council.
The city voted to contribute $5 million to help build a $35 million multi-use sports complex at Blue Oaks Boulevard and Phillip Road. The complex will serve youth and amateur soccer, lacrosse, rugby and football.
Tourism officials believe the project will bring in $8 million to $12 million a year for the region and create hundreds of jobs for athletes. It's a chance to move national attention from the Bay Area and Southern California to their own backyard.
This facility is going to be fantastic for us. It's going to allow soccer to grow even more in this area," said Placer Youth Soccer League President John Cantlay.
He's one of many coaches who call the newly approved site for a multi-use sports complex a game-changer for the 50,000 youth and amateur soccer players in the Sacramento region.
"Some of our recreational teams practicing 3 or 4 to a field," he said. "Our competitive teams are force to practice under the lights year-round, but we have to split the field with another team. So that limits your drills."
The field will also bring a greater chance of hosting regional and national tournaments, something tourism officials hope will brand Placer County as a major sports and recreation destination.
"We're looking at $8-$12 million annual impact," said Kim Summers. "That's just annually what this complex will do. And that's looking at the direct impact which will be our hotels, dining in our restaurants, shopping over at the Galleria and local stores."
Officials will break ground on the new complex next fall and hope to have it complete by early 2018.
