Rocklin Golf Club Closure Leaves Uncertainty In Surrounding Neighborhood
ROCKLIN (CBS13) — A Rocklin golf course has closed its doors, leaving a potentially large impact on the community surrounding it.
For 53 years, the Rocklin Golf Club was a big part of the community until it closed its doors on Sunday. The owner wanted to develop 38 homes on part of the property to boost revenue. The City Council said no and now the doors are closed with everyone wondering what's next.
Golfer Norris Graves says he was shocked to learn the course was shut down for good.
"It's a really sad situation," he said. "I would rather have a golf course here, where they mow the greens put flags in the holes, so we can come down and get the exercise and use it for what it's used for."
The owners wanted to build 38 homes on the course, saying they needed money to make repairs and bring the place up to par. The Rocklin City Council said no to the idea in June.
City leaders thought the more than three dozen new homes would impact the views of the older homes and they weren't convinced the short-term money would keep the golf course afloat in the long run.
Sheryl Foster didn't want new homes on the course blocking her view, but she wasn't in a hurry to see the place close.
Now, with a major part of the neighborhood shuttered and large swaths of brown grass around the corner, what could it mean for home values.
Rocklin Realtor Franklin Burris says it's too early to say if home values will drop in the neighborhood, but says it could have an impact on individual sales in the near future.
"Obviously, you immediately lose all the operation benefits," he said. "It creates uncertainty; uncertainty is never good, buying or selling. It's a hesitation for most people."
