Robbery Suspect Shot By Clerk
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Investigators are working to determine whether a man who was shot while allegedly robbing a convenience store is connected to other armed robberies around Sacramento on Saturday.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said a clerk pursued a suspect after a strong-arm robbery at Hite's Market on Fruitridge Road just after 6:00 p.m.
When the suspect opened fire, the clerk shot back, wounding him in the stomach, authorities said. The suspect fled the scene but showed up at a hospital a short time later for treatment.
Bill Chapman, who is part of the family that owns Hite's, says the employee was justified in his actions.
"You're going to shoot at people trying to make a living? If you get shot and lose your life it's your fault," Chapman said. "I would have done the same thing, you know, it's their life or your life."
Deputies said the suspect matches the description of the man who robbed a Taco Bell and a thrift store earlier Saturday.
"It's not uncommon for robbery suspects to go on sprees, and you know, if they do one and they got away with it, they'll go commit another one," said Deputy Jason Ramos.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Robert Edward Davis, could face charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon after he is treated. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
