Residents Hope New McClatchy Park Disc Golf Course Clears Out Trouble
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A Sacramento park that many avoid at night because of crime is seeing some change.
Organizers unveiled a feature at McClatchy Park many hope will change its atmosphere.
"Sometimes people say you don't want to go to Oak Park because it's not a safe place," said Aimee Phelps.
Sometimes people do say that, but a new disc golf course added to McClatchy Park brings optimism for a small change.
"This park needs a change. I been here 61 years and it needs a change," said one resident.
Aimee Phelps, an Oak Park local, has spent the last year trying to get the disc golf course approved, with certainty that chucking plastic creates a positive environment.
"What happens is it changes the atmosphere of the park," said Phelps. "Because there will be people here 365 days playing this game. They're going to put a presence here in the park that wasn't here before."
"We got baseball, we got football, but this is something different," said one park visitor.
With nine baskets on the course and only $300 per basket, the small investment has proven to be a hole in one.
Saturday's tournament and course unveiling marks the sixth disc golf course at Sacramento-area parks, all of which have experienced immediate change, says Phelps.
"I'm seeing less drug traffic," said Phelps.
The course is open seven days a week, sunrise to sunset. You just have to bring your own discs.
