Reports Of Gun On Campus Raise Concerns At Sierra Community College
ROCKLIN (CBS13) — There was a scare on Sierra Community College campus on Tuesday night after a student reported seeing a gun on campus Tuesday night.
"They told us to get back behind stuff," said Chris Ducusin while walking to class.
Students were quickly surrounded by armed Rocklin Police, some told to stay back while others inside were told to stay put.
Police did a classroom by classroom search for a white man described to them as having red hair and a beard.
"They were patting down people as they were leaving," said one student.
But no gun and no suspect were found in the building and around campus, but still left students feeling uneasy.
"It's scary, it's scary as hell and it's sad that it's reality," said Andrew Diatroptoff who decided to leave class, but then went back inside after the campus was cleared.
Investigators said there was never an alert sent out to students because there wasn't a confirmed threat.
"We were afraid that if we sent an alert out, there are 10 classes in this building, maybe 200 people would come stampeding out of here and we would not be able to speak with the person with a handgun," said Lt. Scott Horrillo with Rocklin Police.
Horrillo said they take these reports very seriously and handle each situation differently to ensure student safety.
"Maybe if something was said or there was an actual threat, definitely an alert would've gone out and we would act a lot differently," he said.
