Report Says California Bridges Are In Bad Shape

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) -- A new report says hundreds of California bridges are in bad shape including several in the Sacramento area.

In a new report from Transportation for America, the Sacramento area ranks fourth among areas its size in the number of bridges that are rated as "structurally deficient."

Pittsburg topped the list and San Francisco came in second.

A deficiency doesn't mean a bridge is in imminent danger of failing.

But the coalition says work or increased inspections are needed.

The analysis is based on a federal inventory database rating bridge pavement, structures and foundations in 2009, the most recent figures available.

According to the report, the problem is no easy fix.

The Federal Highway Administration estimates it would cost close to $71 billion to repair potentially dangerous bridges in the United States.
