Man Armed With Bat Killed By Sacramento Police Officer

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A man carrying a bat refused to respond to an officer's commands and was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Sacramento after he turned toward the officer in a threatening manner, according to police.

The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. on the sidewalk outside the DMV office at 24th Street and Broadway. Several police units responded and streets were blocked off in the area during the busy commute time.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit. He was identified Thursday as Sean Edward Ogle, 32, of Sacramento.

According to CBS13's Neda Iranpour, the incident started at a liquor store at 24th and Second Avenue when the suspect tried to buy booze without any money and then took a bat to a nearby ATM machine.

He was also reportedly swinging the bat at windows of area businesses and parked cars until the encounter with the police officer.

According to police, the first responding officer located the subject on 24th Street and Barnett Avenue. The officer immediately directed the subject to drop the bat on the ground however he refused to acknowledge the officer and continued to walk northbound on 24th Street towards Broadway.

The officer paralleled the subject on foot and repeatedly ordered him to drop the baseball bat, police said.

When the subject suddenly stopped and faced the officer, cocked the baseball bat as if he were going to swing it and advanced on the officer, the officer fired his handgun at the subject, striking him in the upper body.

Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. He has been with the department for eight years.
