Rain, Snow Expected Heading Into Weekend
Record low temperatures were set once again Friday, as the freezing temperatures continue into the weekend.
Morning temperatures dropped to a record 25 degrees at Sacramento Executive Airport, while Stockton tied its 2009 record of 23 degrees.
Clouds will begin to move into the area Friday afternoon, with cool highs peaking at 50 degrees.
After sunset, the wet weather begins with rain in the valley and low snow levels dropping to 500 feet in elevation in the foothills.
The peak wet weather will be between 11 p.m. Friday night to 6 a.m. Saturday morning. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for 3 to 10 inches of snow accumulation in the foothills, and 1 to 2 feet of snow at higher Sierra elevations above 5000 feet. Travel will be slick and difficult during the overnight hours and on Saturday.
Temperatures may be cold enough for a few snowflakes mixed in with the rain for the valley, generally north of Sacramento and east of the Interstate 5 corridor after midnight. Temperatures at the surface in the mid to upper 30s overnight will keep any snowflakes from sticking or accumulating on the valley floor around Sacramento.
Most wet weather in the valley will be over by 7 a.m. Saturday, with lingering snow showers in the foothills and Sierra through midday.
Skies will be clear for the end of the weekend, with another hard freeze for the valley Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings as lows drop into the 20s.
Despite sunshine Sunday into early next week, afternoon highs will remain chilly in the upper 40s.
