Rain In Forecast For Later This Week
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — After record-breaking temperatures the past several days and highs flirting with 70 degrees in mid-January, changes are on the way for the Sacramento Valley.
The first change started on Sunday, with gusty winds keeping the temperature several degrees cooler than the previous spring-like days. Overnight lows will drop to near freezing, and the National Weather Service has issued a hard freeze warning for Monday night into Tuesday morning, with a low of 27 forecast for Sacramento.
A hard freeze warning is issued when temperatures are expected to be below freezing for four or more hours, bringing potential harm to area citrus trees and other sensitive crops.
Then later in the week, a storm system is expected to bring much-needed rain to the valley. According to the National Weather Service, rain is likely beginning Tuesday night and then all through the work week, with more showers possible over the weekend.
Sacramento hasn't seen any measurable rainfall since Dec. 15, when just .07 of an inch fell.
Rain in the valley could of course also mean snow in the Sierras, and the weather service projects a mixture of rain and snow in the mountains all this week. Any white flakes would be a welcome site for ski resorts, which have been using man-made snow machines to stay open during the dry spell.
