Raiders Trade For Carolina Running Back Goodson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Panthers traded depth at one position for depth at another on Friday.

Carolina general manager Marty Hurney announced the team dealt running back Mike Goodson to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for offensive tackle Bruce Campbell.

Goodson, who ran for 501 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons with Carolina, became expendable after the team signed free agent running back Mike Tolbert earlier this month.

The decision to part ways with Goodson did not come as a surprise since he was fourth on the depth chart and a tradable commodity.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Campbell played in four games for the Raiders in 2011.

As a rookie in 2010, he played in 10 games, primarily on special teams, after being selected by Oakland in the fourth round.

"We think Bruce Campbell is a very young, talented offensive lineman who has all the physical qualities to play in this league," Hurney said. "It gives us some more depth at a position where we needed some."

While Campbell has primarily worked at guard the past two seasons for the Raiders, Hurney said the Panthers will look at him at tackle.

The Panthers have Jordan Gross at the left tackle spot, but last year rookie Byron Bell was pressed into starting on the right side in place of Jeff Otah, a former first-round draft pick who has been plagued by knee and back problems the past three years.

Both Bell and Otah are under contract this year.

In three seasons with the Panthers, Goodson played in 28 games with three starts. He rushed 125 times for 501 yards and three touchdowns and added 43 receptions for 329 yards. He was selected by the Panthers the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Goodson only played in four games last season and had no carries and one reception for 4 yards after failing to cure his fumbling problems in the preseason. It didn't help that he injured his hamstring midway through the season or that he was stuck on the depth chart behind two talented former first-round draft picks in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Goodson, 24, had three straight 100-yard rushing games and three touchdowns late in the 2010 season in the final year under coach John Fox. But even then fumbling was an issue. He put the ball on the ground six times that season, losing three.

Coach Ron Rivera actually made Goodson carry a football around with him at training camp last summer after he fumbled in back-to-back preseason games.

"Mike is a talented player who gave us three good years, but our depth at running back allowed us to make this move," Hurney said.
