Quiet, Gated Roseville Community Rocked By Fatal Stabbing
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – A gated Roseville community is marked with memorial candles and painful emotion.
"We are worried and sad, it's never happened in our neighborhood," resident Sukhi Sander said.
Sander says it all started Friday afternoon. His neighbor stopped by, giving him a heads up about her sixteenth birthday party at the end of the cul-de-sac on Lanie Court that night.
"I knew [it was] going to be noisy," Sander said.
But he never imagined it would turn deadly.
"Two thirty, police wake me up and my wife and I see outside there was a dead person," Sander said.
Deputies say that person is a 21-year-old. He was walking to the party with friends when a white sedan pulled up.
Investigators say the driver said something to the victim then got out of the car, stabbed the man three or four times, got back in his car immediately, and sped off.
"The car was right here when they left," neighbor Tania Stewart said.
Stewart says it was too dark to identify anyone in the getaway car. But she's certain deputies passed right by the suspect on their way to the neighborhood.
"So quick, because police was down there," Stewart said.
Deputies say they were responding to noise complaints at the party before the stabbing.
An hour later, less than a block away, the man was stabbed to death.
"I guess it's a mystery to the point of its unclear why the suspect did what he did," said Lt. John Poretti of the Placer County Sheriff's Office.
Lt. Poretti says investigators are analyzing surveillance footage around the subdivision.
For now, Sander is praying for peace.
"I was just praying for his family and for him."
Deputies say they have some leads, but there's only so much they can tell us.
Sunday, authorities identified the man killed as 21-year-old Carmichael resident Andrew Michael Petrenko.
