Proposed Plan Could Replace Jail And Bail With GPS Tracking

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Governor Brown has signed a bill into law that will transfer thousands of prison inmates to local jails to save the state money.

Under the new law, non-violent criminals would be released and given GPS ankle monitors, instead of paying bail.

Placer County started the program more than a year ago.  They say it's working to free up space in their jail.

"We're very worried, they're already doing this in Placer County and the bail industry is down 80 percent," said Topo Padilla

The bail bond industry is worried that the GPS monitoring will hurt their business while putting more inmates back on the streets.
