Possible Modesto Tornado Rips Down Power Lines, Fences On Christmas Eve

MODESTO (CBS13) — The National Weather Service is investigating a second possible tornado touchdown in Modesto.

Crews are expected to check the scene on Friday where a reported tornado pulled down power lines and made a mess of Floyd Avenue and Coffee Road on Thursday afternoon.

At least 14 power poles came crashing down in central Modesto on Thursday after a possible tornado reportedly ripped out a tree that fell on the lines. The result was a dangerous mess of wires and poles on the street.

In a Modesto neighborhood, Stephen Volk says the possible tornado caused a lot of damage in its short existence.

"It picked up his carport, it messed up his air conditioner, picked up a big heavy steel beam and brought most of the debris this way and took it into houses," he said.

Ana Rivas, who lives on the border of Ceres and South Modesto, was getting things ready for Christmas Eve when she looked out the window.

"I've lived in California all my life and I've never seen anything like this," she said. "I told the kids to get down and get away from the windows, but it seemed to go pretty fast."
