Police: Sex Offender Arrested For Posing As Salvation Army Worker
VACAVILLE (CBS13) -- A convicted sex offender was arrested for posing as a holiday bell ringer and keeping what he collected. The Salvation Army says they fired him after one day on the job, and he then set up shop on his own.
Maurice Van Buren, 47, of Vacaville, was arrested Friday afternoon after the Vacaville Police Department received information that he had been embezzling funds intended for the Salvation Army.
Records showed that Van Buren had been hired as a bell ringer, but after a records check revealed his sex offender status, he was terminated from employment.
According to authorities, Van Buren obtained boxes of Salvation Army logo and continued to post himself at various locations throughout Vacaville.
Authorities found Van Buren on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Marshall Road. Officers located money obtained by false pretenses and evidence indicating that that he was posing as an employee of the Salvation Army.
Van Buren was arrested for embezzlement and was booked into the Solano County Jail without incident.
