Police: More Than $1,000 In Fake Bills Passed At Sonora Walmart
SONORA (CBS13) – Sonora Police are on the lookout for the two suspects who were able to pass more than one thousand dollars in counterfeit $20 bills at a Walmart store this week.
Suspects passed the fake bills on three occasions, according to information from the Sonora Police Department. In the first incident, back on Monday around 6:46 p.m., a middle-aged man paid off his bill with $240 worth of counterfeit $20 bills.
Tuesday, the Walmart was hit twice. First, around 10:25 p.m., a man paid with $300 of counterfeit bills. Then, around 10:40 p.m., a woman paid with $480 in counterfeit $20 bills.
In total, $1,020 in counterfeit money was passed. Police note that the bills look and feel authentic, but they lack certain obvious security features like an uneven security strip, and almost all the bills have the same serial number. Further, the bills were given some kind of scent to smell like real money.
Police noted that, around the same time as the Walmart incidents, a woman also tried to pass several counterfeit $100 bills at a few businesses in downtown Sonora. In these incidents, police say, the bills were identified as fake and not accepted.
