Police Investigating Fatal Shooting Near Sacramento Elementary School

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento police are investigating a fatal shooting near an elementary school early this morning.

The shooting took place in the 2800 block of 21st Avenue near Ethel Phillips Elementary School.

A man was shot several times and was taken to the UC Medical Center where he later died.  Police say the victim is a 48-year-old man.  His identity has not been released.

Police created a detour so teachers and students could get to the elementary school which was open today but students were kept inside.

"We kept school open so it's operational but we were able to redirect kids and families so they would enter school on the back side," said Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson was just at Ethel Phillips School last week reading to students.  Today, he showed up to lend support.

"It's certainly devastating anytime you have a homicide in our community, but when it's right out in front of an elementary school where kids can be impacted that's just not good," said Mayor Johnson.

Police have not made any arrests in the case and do not have a motive in the case.

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Enter SACTIP followed by the tip information.  Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
