Police Arrest Gang Member After Modesto Shootout

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) --Authorities have arrested a man they believe was one of the gunmen involved in what's being described as a shootout between rival gangs in Modesto.

During a raid of a home Wednesday by members of a Stanislaus County SWAT unit, deputies arrested Juan Carlos Mendoza as he tried to drive away from house.

The 23-year-old Modesto man was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted homicide and criminal street gang activity.

Investigators say Mendoza was one of three suspects in the shooting Tuesday that left a male juvenile wounded.

Authorities have not released the name of the juvenile, but say he is a self-admitted gang member.

He is being cared in a hospital out of the area for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Though there were no other injuries, the house where the shooting took place is across the street from a middle school.
