Police: 10-Year-Old Drives Drunk Dad Around Elk Grove Neighborhood

ELK GROVE (CBS13) - A 10-year-old child was spotted behind the wheel of the family SUV over the weekend and Dad's been arrested. Police say she was driving from his lap while he was drunk.

You might call it a daddy day care DUI.

No one would admit knowing anything when CBS13 went to the Elk Grove home of Kenneth Grau on Monday.

"Are you related to him? Are you his wife?" CBS13's Steve Large asked.

"You know what, I think you need to go away," she responded.

But the Toyota 4Runner in the driveway fits the description of the vehicle cops pulled over this weekend in the area of Mykonos Way and Freitag Way.

Cops caught him after a woman called police with the surprising sight.

"When I called the authorities, I reported it was between a 9 and an 11-year-old," the witness said on Monday.

The woman says the girl nearly hit her.

"I'm glad I called it in," she said. "It's a good thing that no one got seriously hurt."

That 10-year-old girl driving down streets taking corners in her own neighborhood apparently had no sense the trouble she was putting herself and others in. Just by the expression on her face, she was having a blast.

"She was smiling," the witness said. "It was pretty erratic. She swerved into my lane and then overcompensated to swerve to the side of the road and ended up pretty much parked on the side of the road."

All allegedly while on her drunk dad's lap at 10:45 on a Saturday morning. Rau reportedly got angry with Elk Grove police officers as they checked him for impairment and had to be taken to the ground and cuffed when he resisted arrest. The 10-year-old was released to a family member.

No one at the residence was interested in talking about the incident on Monday.

"Leave! Get out!" a teen boy yelled.

"We're on public property right now. We're on the sidewalk," Large responded.

"All right," the teen said before hopping in a van and extending his middle finger as he drove off.

That's another move not endorsed by the DMV.
