Plan For Downtown Los Angeles NFL Stadium Abandoned, Two L.A. Proposals Remain
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Plans have been abandoned for an NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles that until recently was the front-runner for returning the league to the region.
Developer AEG said in a statement Monday that it is "no longer in discussion with the NFL or any NFL team."
The announcement leaves two clear contenders for the NFL's return to the area, both in cities just outside Los Angeles: A stadium in Inglewood proposed in January with the backing of St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke, and a project in Carson announced last month with the joint backing of the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers.
The downtown project — known as Farmers Field — had widespread support from Los Angeles city officials and other boosters, but it never had a team attached.
Just over a week ago, the group commissioned a report warning that a rival project nearby could be a potential terrorist target because of its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport.
The report by former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said that constructing an 80,000-seat stadium in Inglewood - near the airport runways - "materially increases the risk of a terrorist event."
