Placerville To Consider Removing Mayor

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- The city council in a small Northern California town is set to consider removing the mayor from office after he was charged with perjury and conspiracy in connection with alleged property he owns in the city.

The agenda for Tuesday's Placerville City Council meeting also calls on the council to consider requesting that Mayor David Machado take an indefinite leave from the council.

The El Dorado County district attorney's office filed a complaint against the 53-year-old Machado on Thursday. It accuses Machado of buying property in the city's redevelopment zone after he voted in favor of the redevelopment project and then trying to hide his ownership interest and the conflict of interest it created.

Machado, who was released on $30,000 bail, has not responded to phone calls or visits to his home.
