Pizza Delivery Carjacking Triggers Pursuit, Attempted Arson
FAIRFIELD, Calif. (CBS13) -- The carjacking of a pizza delivery driver set off a vehicle and foot pursuit through Fairfield neighborhoods that ended with a collision and an attempted arson, according to authorites.
The victim called the Fairfield Police Department after he was robbed at gunpoint on Limewood Court by four or five Hispanic males, one of whom sped away in his vehicle and apparently picked up another accomplice.
As officers responded to the area at around 5:40 p.m. Friday, other neighbors reported a small collision between the victim's stolen car and another vehicle on Silver Creek Drive near Lopes Road. The two occupants of the car fled on foot.
One of the suspects was arrested almost immediately near Oakbrook Elementary School, according to police, but the second man was spotted breaking into a home on the 2900 block of Orinda Way.
Responding officers said found a broken rear sliding door and discovered that the suspect placed a wood cutting board onto the home's stove, allegedly to start a fire and cover his escape. Officers put the fire out before the flames were able to spread beyond the kitchen, authorities said.
Another officer was alerted by a resident on Ram Gate Court that a suspect was hiding in the bushes. The second suspect was taken into custody after being tazed.
Authorities said the suspects were identified as 18-year-old Michael Aaron Perez from Fairfield and a 17-year-old San Francisco resident. The other men who allegedly helped the suspects during the carjacking have not been identified.
Police credited alert neighbors for allowing officers to swiftly arrest of the two suspects and the contain the kitchen fire before it could spread.
