Pilot Killed After Plane Crashes Into Bay

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a person piloting a single-engine plane died when the plane crashed into San Leandro Bay shortly after taking off from Oakland International Airport.

The crash occurred around 3:40 p.m. Sunday.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the pilot, whose name has not been released, was the only person on board. He says the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.

Television news footage showed the plane lying on its nose with its tail up. Witnesses told KGO-TV they heard the plane's engine cut out before it crashed.
