Photographer Pulled To Safety After Motorcyclist Crashes Shoot
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - They stopped to take photos at a scenic spot overlooking the river when a motorcycle suddenly slammed into them. The impact of the crash sent one person over a bridge.
That's when Cody Caldwell said his military training kicked in.
Cody and his girlfriend Kelsie have been dating for more than four years and are both stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Yuba County. They were just wrapping up after a day of posing for photographs along the Sacramento River when out of nowhere an out-of-control motorcycle crashed the photo shoot.
"Next thing I know I hear 'Oh my god, look out!" and next thing I know I'm on the ground, the camera guy is hanging from the bridge," he said.
Still disoriented, Cody was able to get up and pull the photographer to safety.
"I grabbed him to pull him up just enough to where he can finish pulling himself up and then I ran over to Kelsie's aid," he said. "I told the gentleman who was on the bike and still on the bridge to lay down, stay still."
Cody said his military training kicked in immediately.
"You never know when it's going to happen and when it does happen, you're trained for it, it's automatic."
After pulling the photographer to safety, Cody stayed by his girlfriend's side until help arrived.
"I could have got up hurt, severely hurt, and then hurt myself worse by moving around like that, but luckily I sustained little to no injury," he said. "I consider it a miracle."
Cody has served with the U.S. Air Force in war but has never had to put his life-saving skills to work until Sunday.
"I was just doing what I would hope anyone else would do," he said.
