PG&E Replacing Gas Pipeline That Leaked In Roseville
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) -- Work is scheduled to begin Wednesday night on replacing more than 400 feet of gas pipeline under Cirby Way near Riverside Avenue that leaked and started a fire last month in Roseville, according to PG&E.
The leak Sept. 27 ignited a fire above the surface that burned for hours and forced police and fire to block off the busy intersection overnight while PG&E crews worked on capping the leak.
PG&E will trench and install a new 4-inch polyethylene pipe to replace the entire length of the pipeline, which was originally installed in 1981. There are not anticipated to be any interruptions of gas service to customers during the work, the utility company said.
Weather permitting, the project is expected to take three to four weeks. Lane closures and work will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and will be completed in sections to minimize the impact on traffic as much as possible, PG&E said.
During this time, one or two of the three westbound lanes will be closed while the left turn lane will remain open for through traffic.
Work will be completed daily before 6 a.m., at which time all lanes will reopen to traffic. Once installation is complete, the new pipe will be tested before being placed into service. Work will generally be done Sunday nights to Thursday nights but could occur on some Friday nights, PG&E said.
The pipe replacement will be from the northwest corner of the intersection of Cirby Way and Riverside Avenue to just over 400 feet east on Cirby Way in the westbound lanes.
