Pet Store Owner Faces Criminal Charges

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) -- A former South Lake Tahoe pet store owner faces a 112-count criminal complaint over the receipt or sale of 75 puppies in 2008 and 2009.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports El Dorado County prosecutors filed the charges against former Broc's Puppies operator Dennis Franks.

Among other charges, Franks faces 65 felony counts of grand theft by false pretense and 27 felony counts of forgery.

According to the complaint filed Dec. 16, Frank sold puppies he knew had health problems and puppies with veterinary documents containing forged signatures of a local veterinarian.

Franks' attorney, John Castellanos, says he could not immediately comment on specifics of the charges.

Franks previously has denied any wrongdoing.
