UPDATE: Pedestrian Struck, Killed By West Sacramento Police Responding To Pursuit
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A pedestrian was hit and killed by a West Sacramento police officer responding to a stolen vehicle pursuit Tuesday night.
The incident happened in the area of Sutter Avenue and W. Capitol Avenue at about 8:30 p.m.
The officer was responding to a call for back-up when the pedestrian was hit.
The initial pursuing officer stopped the chase when the pedestrian was hit, but the 17-year-old suspect was later tracked down to a back yard a few miles away where residents held him down until officers arrived and arrested him. He was held down by eight to 10 people until police showed up.
"I'm just getting tired of this kind of crap happening," said the owner of the home where the suspect was caught. "We live in a good neighborhood and it seems like in the last three or four weeks it's gone to hell."
The pedestrian died at the scene. No information about the victim was immediately available. The officer was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Eastbound W. Capitol was shut down at Harbor Boulevard.
The CHP will take over the investigation of the pedestrian's death.
