UPDATE: Suspect, Victim In Fatal Roseville Crash Identified
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) – An alleged drunk driver accused of fleeing from police and causing a four-car accident that killed a pedestrian Tuesday evening in Roseville has been identified.
Police arrested 50-year-old Oleg Tarasuk on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Washington and Main streets at about 8:30 p.m.
"I'm still in shock," Olan Sellers, who witnessed the accident, said on Wednesday. "I can't believe somebody would just hit somebody and leave him there."
Earlier, police received reports of a reckless and possibly impaired driver in the area and encountered the driver parked at a recycling center near the fairgrounds. He reportedly revved his engine as officers approached and they tried to take the key out of the ignition.
But Tarasuk sped off, using his pickup to push one of the police patrols cars out of the way.
"Our officers approached on foot, engaged in a short conversation with him, at which point he started to hit the accelerator," Roseville Police Lt. Michael Doane said. "One officer actually reached in the car to try to shut the engine off to prevent him from leaving."
The officers got back in their patrol cars and gave chase, but by the time police caught up to the suspect vehicle, the crash had already happened and the pedestrian was down in the roadway.
"And I seen this guy standing at the corner and this guy bumped a curb and just ran him over and left him there," Sellers said.
The victim was identified Wednesday as Gregory Louis Delacampa, 26, of Roseville.
A woman and her 8-year-old daughter also witnessed the crash.
"It was just shock, complete shock," she said. "You knew that somebody died right in front of your face, and my daughter was pretty traumatized."
Tarasuk and another person were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
"He continued to be combative as officers were trying to take him into custody," Doane said.
Roseville's Major Accident Investigation Team was at the scene of the crash throughout the night. The intersection was closed until about 7:15 a.m.
Tarasuk is being held in the Placer County Jail on $275,000 bail.
