Parolee Sought In NorCal Crime Spree

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Police were looking Saturday for a parolee they believe shot a man at a San Jose gas station and later kidnapped a woman.

Paul Ray Castillo was wanted in the robbing of a 42-year-old San Jose man who was shot as he pumped gas into his car around 11 a.m. Friday, said San Jose police spokesman Jose Garcia.

The condition of the victim was not known, but he was expected to survive. His name has not been released.

After the robbery, police say Castillo, 33, of San Jose, drove to a nearby shopping center and approached Cindy Nguyen, who was having car problems.

Nguyen, 60, has not been heard from since.

"We want the community to be aware that he is armed and dangerous," Garcia said.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, Castillo was reportedly seen in an apartment complex, where nearly 60 officers, police dogs and helicopters searched the area and nearby neighborhood for Castillo.

Officers shot at Castillo when they say he came at them in a threatening manner, but it was not clear whether he was hit.

"We don't know if he was actually wounded or not," Garcia said.

Before Friday, Castillo was wanted for violating the terms of his parole, but Garcia did not know what Castillo had previously served time for.
