Parents Supporting Summer Programs As Budget Cuts Mount

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Parents are stepping up to keep summer programs for students active and running as budget cuts force schools to scale back.

Corey and Erika Crenshaw said they helped create non-profit Camp Fit Rock in Natomas after seeing a number of school-sponsored programs fall under the budget deficits in recent years, hoping to keep an affordable camp open to kids.

"We decided to take it into our own hands," Erika said. "This is more work than anything I've done in my life, but it's the most fulfilling."

The cost per child stands at about $60 a week -- or about $2.50 an hour -- which helps pay for professional instructors and healthy snacks throughout the day. The list of sports at Camp Fit Rock is exhaustive and probably exhausting: Everything from basketball to Zumba to soccer to volleyball.

The Natomas Unified School District allowed the program to use their facilities thanks to the organization's non-profit status. Corey and Erika said they hope to get corporate sponsorships to eliminate the cost to all families.

Space in the program is still available. More information can be found on LAKP.org.
