One Road, Two Days, Two Shootings Leave 1 Dead In Modesto
MODESTO (CBS13) — Police in Modesto have been working nonstop after two shootings, one deadly, on a single road.
On Wednesday night, a 26 year old man was shot and killed while celebrating his birthday.
A shooting on the same street just blocks away, on Thursday.
"It's crazy man, crazy," said Enrique Orozco
"To think that in this type of neighborhood, there is that type of stuff going on," Orozco continued.
"It is kind of a little unnerving," said Mackenzie Schendel who lives nearby.
The first shooting happened in the 1300 block of East Rumble Rd.
"Came outside and there was a bunch of lights," said Orozco.
Police were in the area on an unrelated call. They were flagged down after hearing gun shots.
Joseph Jackson, 26, was dead when they arrived. Two bullet holes visible in an exterior wall.
His step father tells CBS13 over the phone that Jackson was celebrating his 26th birthday. And had turned his life around since having a child three years ago.
Sixteen hours after Wednesday's deadly shooting, A Modesto police officer was four blocks away following up on Jackson's killing. Police say the detective saw someone get out of a vehicle and fire at another vehicle.
"He then followed the vehicle and they then fled on foot," said Lt. Ivan Valencia with the Modesto Police Department.
Three people were eventually taken into custody. Police say there is a strong possibility today's shooting is related to Jackson's death.
"Several of the people involved have been identified as associates," said Valencia.
A family is now without their son, and a child without a father.
No victims have come forward from Thursday's shooting. Several schools were locked down for a few hours earlier in the day.
It's unclear if police have a suspect in Jackson's death.
