On The Money: Downtown Brown

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) --  It's official. You can soon call him "Downtown Brown". Jerry Brown is house hunting in Sacramento – although his new place is more likely to be a loft than a mansion. CBS 13 has confirmed from the Brown camp, the incoming Governor is looking for a place to live in downtown Sacramento.

Jerry Brown won't be selling his home in the Oakland hills anytime soon – but he does want a place to sleep close to the Capitol, so Brown will be viewing downtown lofts this weekend. The news has Sacramento area realtors buzzing.

"I understand the Governor elect is a real man of the people," said Rob McQuade, a realtor with McMartin Realty. McQuade took CBS 13 on a visual tour of potential downtown properties that might entice Jerry Brown.

"I figure he'd want to be in the middle of everything," McQuade told CBS 13 as he walked along L Street near 18th.

Downtown realtor Rob McQuade said Jerry Brown has plenty of properties to chose from that are perfect for an incoming Governor. He could rent a cozy one bedroom loft at 1801 L Street for example,

for about $1500 a month, with a modern kitchen and full amenities. It would be a big improvement from the spartan bachelor pad Brown lived in across from the Capitol, the last time he was Governor in the 1970's.

"Yeah it's something a little bit better than slapping a mattress down on a bare apartment,'' McQuade joked. He then added, "I can see why this might appeal to him too - a loft is still a raw kind of space, something for him and for her."

Jerry Brown is married now to Anne Gust Brown – and if the couple is looking for a room with a view – he could try the Penthouses at Capitol Park,

where a two-bedroom loft rents for about $3200 a month.

And if the new Governor decided to buy instead of rent, he could purchase a $950 thousand penthouse, just a five minute walk from the Capitol.

One place he won't be staying – the old Governor's mansion, where his father Pat Brown lived as Governor back in the 1960's.

"We have a Mansion," Brown told reporters last month. "We have a lot of great space in downtown Sacramento. So I'm not worried about living quarters, we'll find them."

Brown visited the old family home earlier this week, but it reportedly has no working bathrooms upstairs and significant water damage. The new Governor may consider using private funds to renovate the old Governor's mansion – as a place to entertain official guests.
