Officials: Onlookers Likely Scared Missing Nevada Bear Cub Away From Caged Mom
INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) - Nevada wildlife officials are turning to "Plan B" in their attempt to reunite a captured bear with her missing cub at Lake Tahoe.
The mother was shot with a tranquilizer dart in a tree at Incline High School Wednesday, days after she and her cub were trapped and released in the back country above Carson City.
She was placed her in a trap with two chambers on the school's football field in hope the cub would return Thursday.
Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says surveillance video shows people wandering around the trap overnight and likely scared the cub away.
Healy says they'll hold the bear until Saturday, then re-release her with a satellite collar near where the two were released Monday. If the cub's found later, they'll track the mom and release the cub nearby.
