Officials Vote To Abandon School Over Pipeline

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS/AP) -- A Sacramento-area school district voted Thursday night to relocate students from an elementary school because it is located near a potentially dangerous gas pipeline.
Officials at the Twin Rivers Unified School District have voted to immediately move 500 students from Twin Rivers Elementary School to other local schools while officials ready Las Palmas Junior High School for their arrival.

Las Palmas Junior High School is currently being used as an adult education facility.

PG& E officials told school staff as well as parents that the pipeline is not dangerous, and is currently being taken off the "risk list."

A similar pipeline exploded in San Bruno on Sept. 9, killing eight people and leveling dozens of homes.

After that explosion, pipeline owner Pacific Gas & Electric Co. released a list of the top 100 pipeline segments that required close monitoring, repairs or replacement.

The list identified 1,437 feet of line less than a block from Harmon Johnson.

PG&E spokesman Brian Swanson tells the Sacramento Bee the line has been inspected several times and is safe.
